Bronco Softball Heads to San Diego Classic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Getting set for another weekend on the road, Santa Clara softball heads to Southern California for the San Diego Classic in Santee, Calif. The Broncos will play games vs. Western Carolina, Utah State, Harvard, San Diego State, and Utah Valley beginning Fri., March 13 at 11:30 a.m. For the full schedule, click here. Last week Stanford and No. 17 Minnesota swept the Broncos at the Stanford Invitational. They are now 5-17 on the season.

"I like the fact that we have stayed the course and kept our fight during the first part of this season," said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "We would like to see us have more quality starts and for our pitching to be a little more consistent across the board. I like the schedule this weekend. There are some good opportunities for us and it is fun to be able to see so different teams."

Santa Clara is hitting .267 (158-591) as a team with 30 doubles, two triples, and 15 home runs. They post a 5.37 ERA with 63 strikeouts and 70 walks in 142.0 innings.

Breezy Bernard leads the Broncos with a .338 (22-64) batting average. Bernard has hit seven doubles and one home run to go with 11 RBI and four runs scored. Ellie Fisher leads the team in OBP with a .468 mark and is hitting .333 (21-63). She has a team-high 14 walks and 13 runs scored to go with a triple and three RBI while also leading the team with 10 steals. Jordan Newell is also batting .333 (20-60) with tow home runs and 13 RBI while scoring 10 runs and adding four doubles. Gianetta France leads the Broncos with six home runs and 17 RBI while hitting .308 (20-65). She has added four doubles and 11 runs scored. Casandra Padilla has smacked three homers and six doubles while scoring 12 runs and knocking in nine. She is hitting .300 (18-60) as well.

Ciara Gonzales leads Santa Clara pitchers in ERA (3.76), wins (5), appearances (18), games started (11), complete games (4), innings pitched (63.1), strikeouts (25), and fewest walks (14). McCall James has thrown 36.0 innings over 13 games and four starts. She has tossed one complete game with 18 strikeouts. Briana Rios has appeared in 11 games and made five starts with seven strikeouts in 29.2 innings. Micaela Vierra has thrown 13.0 innings in eight games and two starts. She has fanned 13.

San Diego State is 15-8 on the season and 7-1 at home. The Aztecs are hitting .293 (180-615) as a team with 30 doubles, one triple, and 15 home runs. They post a 3.94 ERA with 84 strikeouts and 74 walks in 151.0 innings. They are outscoring opponents 109-101.

Kayla Jordan leads San Diego State with a .408 (29-71) batting average and 19 runs scored. She has hit a team-high eight doubles to go with a triple, a home run, and 10 RBI. Lorena Bauer leads the team with four home runs and 23 RBI. She is hitting .356 (26-73) with six doubles and 12 runs scored. Jenavee Peres hits .339 (19-56) with two home runs, two doubles, 16 RBI and seven runs scored.

Erica Romero is the only pitcher to throw significant innings for the Aztecs. She has appeared in 21 games and made 15 starts with nine complete games and three shutouts while also picking up a save. Romero is 13-5 with a 3.11 ERA in 110.1 innings with 71 strikeouts and 39 walks.

Utah State is 1-10 on the season and 1-7 in neutral games. The Aggies are hitting .287 (89-310) as a team with 12 doubles, no triples, and nine home runs. They post a 7.00 ERA with 34 strikeouts and 36 walks in 69.0 innings. They have been outscored 84-46.

Alleyah Armendariz leads the team with a .481 (13-27) batting averaged, five home runs, 10 RBI, and seven runs scored. Sarah Chow is batting .382 (13-34) with seven runs scored. Hailey Froton is hitting .333 (12-36) with three doubles and three runs scored to go with seven RBI.

Armendariz has thrown a team-high 28.0 innings in six games and five starts with two complete games. She has walked 11 and struck out 11 with a 7.50 ERA. Noelle Johnson has tossed 27.2 innings over six games and five starts with two complete games. She has struck out 15 with 16 walks and has a 6.07 ERA.

Harvard is 3-4 on the season and 3-3 in neutral games. The Crimson are hitting .242 (44-182) as a team with five doubles, three triples, and five home runs. They post a 4.26 ERA with 35 strikeouts and 19 walks in 44.1 innings. They have outscored opponents 33-29.

Katherin Appelbee is tops on the team with a .438 (7-16) batting average and six RBI. She has hit one double and one triple to go with four runs scored. Zoe Galindo leads the team with seven runs scored and is hitting .313 (5-16). Katherine Lantz has hit two home runs to lead Harvard. She has four RBI and five runs scored while hitting .294 (5-17).

Taylor Cabe leads the Crimson with 21.1 innings pitched in four games and two starts. She has thrown two complete games while striking out 15 and walking two. Cabe posts a 2.63 ERA and a 1-2 record. Morgan Groom has a team-low 2.27 ERA in 12.1 innings. She has appeared in three games and made one starts that was a complete game shutout. She has struck out 11 and walked six. 

Western Carolina is 7-10 on the season and 5-3 in neutral games. The Catamounts are hitting .211 (90-426) as a team with 10 doubles, one triple, and nine home runs. They post a 3.41 ERA with 128 strikeouts and 74 walks in 111.0 innings. They have been outscored on the season 64-45.

Courtney Price has a team-best .298 (14-47) batting average and 10 RBI. She is also tied for the team lead with eight runs scored while hitting two home runs and two doubles. Taylor Sigmon is tied with Voctoria Mariscal for the team lead with three home runs. Sigmon is batting .212 (11-52) with eight runs scored, eight RBI, and three doubles. Mariscal has scored seven runs and driven in eight while hitting .208 (10-48).

Jordan Garrett leads Western Carolina with 61.0 innings pitched and a 5-4 record. She has appeared in 12 games, all starts, with four complete games and one shutout while striking out 69 and walking 38. Garrett posts a 2.18 ERA. Sigmon leads the team with a 1.94 ERA in 11 games and one start. She has picked up two saves while striking out 32 and walking nine in 21.1 innings. Courtney Buchanan has thrown 22.1 innings with a 7.52 ERA. She has appeared in five games and made three starts with one complete game. Buchanan has struck out 19 against 21 walks.

Utah Valley is 9-13 on the season and 8-10 in neutral games. The Wolverines are hitting .277 (160-577) as a team with 30 doubles, five triples, and 24 home runs. They post a 5.03 ERA with 98 strikeouts and 111 walks in 142.0 innings. They have been outscored 144-102.

Jaylen Watson leads Utah Valley with a .364 (20-55) batting average. She has hit four home runs and three doubles to go with 10 runs scored and eight RBI. Brianna Gatlin is also hitting .364 (16-44) with a team-high 12 runs scored. She has hit four home runs and four doubles with 11 RBI. Brittney Vansway leads the Wolverines with 14 RBI while hitting .277 (18-65). She has hit four home runs and two doubles while scoring nine runs.

Bailey Moore has appeared in 19 games while making 13 starts. She has three complete games and one shutout while throwing 83.2 innings. Moore is 6-6 with a 3.85 ERA and has struck out 65 with 53 walks. Makayala Shadie has thrown 30.0 innings in 11 games and five starts. She has two complete games and a save with 21 strikeouts and 28 walks.
