Broncos Fall in Extras to Manhattan

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Starting the final home tournament of the season, Santa Clara softball fell to Manhattan by a final of 2-0 in eight innings. The Broncos are now 8-20 on the season.

Santa Clara returns to the field tomorrow, Sat., March 21 at 10 a.m. vs. UC Santa Barbara and at 2:30 p.m. vs. Brown.

Ciara Gonzales (7-9) started for Santa Clara and picked up a loss in 8.0 innings. Gonzales allowed two runs, one earned, one six hits with a walk and a strikeout. Jordan Newell was 2-3 to lead the offense. Geenamarie Bonilla was 2-3 while Breezy Bernard was 1-3 with a double.

Amy Bright (4-3) started for Manhattan and picked up a win in 8.0 innings. Bright allowed no runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Meredith Bryant was 1-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored to lead the offense. Mickayla Romero was 1-4 with an RBI while Emily Cutler was 2-4.

With one out in the home half of the fourth Bernard doubled to left and was lifted for pinch runner Kimberly Goulart. The next two batters both popped out to keep the game scoreless through four innings.

Newell started things in the bottom of the fifth with a single to right. Gianetta France laid down a sacrifice bunt but no one covered first and the play put runners on the corners with no one out. The Jaspers came back to get three outs and keep it a 0-0 game.

Newell led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to center. The next three Broncos went down in order to send the game to extra innings.

Stephanie Reinhardt started on second in the top of the eighth and was moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt. Bryant doubled just over the third base bag to bring in the first run of the game. Romero knocked in another run with a single to center.

Ashley Haney was placed on second to start the bottom of the eighth and Amanda Delfino pinch ran. Ellie Fisher laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third. A grounder back to the pitcher didn't bring in the run and left the game up to Bernard. She popped out to third to end the game.
