Softball Tops Harvard, Falls to San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball beat Harvard by a final of 3-0 and lost to San Diego State 10-4 on Saturday. The Broncos are now 7-19 on the season.

Santa Clara returns to the field tomorrow, Sun., March 15 at 10 a.m. vs. Utah Valley.

Game 1

Briana Rios (1-7) started for Santa Clara and picked up a win in the complete game. Rios allowed five hits with a walk. Kimberly Goulart was 2-2 with a triple, a run scored, and an RBI to lead the offense. Geenamarie Bonilla and Breezy Bernard were both 1-3 with an RBI.

Taylor Cabe (1-5) started for Harvard and picked up a loss in 3.0 innings. Cabe allowed two runs on four hits with a strikeout. Katie Appelbe was 2-3 to lead the offense. Cat Callaway was 2-2 and Andrea Del Conte added a single.

Goulart singled with one out in the bottom of the third to start a two-run inning for the Broncos. After the second out was recorded, Bernard singled in the first run of the game and Bonilla followed with another RBI single to make it 2-0.

Jenna Krummen was hit by a pitch with two down in the bottom of the fourth to start a two-out rally. Goulart smacked a triple to bring in Krummen and make the score 3-0 in favor of Santa Clara.

In the top of the seventh Harvard got runners on first and second with one out on back-to-back singles. Rios induced a double play ball to close out the win for the Broncos.

Game 2

Ciara Gonzales (6-8) started for Santa Clara and picked up a loss in 2.0-plus innings. Gonzales allowed six runs on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout. Jordan Newell was 2-3 with an RBI to lead the offense. Ellie Fisher was 1-3 with a walk, a run scored, and a stolen base while Chiara Biagini was 1-3 with a run scored.

Erica Romero (15-7) started for San Diego State and picked up a win in 6.0 innings. Romero allowed one run on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Leia Ruiz was 3-3 with an RBI to lead the offense. Kayla Bufardeci was 2-3 with an RBI while Jaylene Ignacio was 1-1 with a home run, a walk, and two runs scored.

Santa Clara struck first in the bottom of the second. Biagini singled to right center with one down and moved up to second on a ground out. Newell came through with the two out RBI to put the Broncos on top.

San Diego State scored six runs in the top of the third before an out was recorded. After five runs had come across, Gonzales was lifted for Rios who gave up an RBI single before getting the final three outs. The inning ended with the Aztecs up 6-1.

A solo home run by Ignacio in the top of the fourth by Ignacio extended the lead to 7-1 for San Diego State.

The Aztecs added another run in the top of the seventh on a solo home run by Hayley Miles. They would score two more runs to take a 10-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Gianetta France started the bottom of the seventh with a walk and was lifted for pinch runner Taylor Bojorquez. Newell followed with a single to right center that put runners on the corners. Goulart walked to load the bases and Fisher hit a fielder's choice to knock in a run. After a ground out moved Fisher to second, Bernard singled in both runs to make it 10-4. A fly out to left ended the game.
