Track & Field Posts 18 Collegiate-Best Times at Cal Poly Spring Break Challenge

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Santa Clara track & field turned in top finishes and several collegiate-best times as it continued its outdoor season Wednesday at the Cal Poly Spring Break Challenge. The Broncos had 21 runners compete in three different events and posted 18 PRs at Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex.

Zach Litoff's 1,500-meter PR 3:50.05 was good for second place in the field of 41, and keeps him as the third-fastest 1,500m runner in program history. Spencer Fischer clocked a 1,500m 3:50.73 for fourth place on the day, making him the fourth-fastest Bronco all-time at that distance. Fresh off racing at the NCAA cross countrchampionship, Jack Davidson also cracked the top 10 with a 3:51.85, good for seventh place.

Sophia Morris took third place in the women's 800-meter run with a 2:19.21 to shatter her PR by more than six seconds. Hayley Harrison led a group of nine Broncos at 1,500 meters with an 11th-place PR 4:48.95.

The Broncos raced against the host Mustangs, CSUN and Saint Mary's.

"We had a great day in SLO," head coach Felipe Montoro said about the men's team. "Cal Poly has a really strong distance squad so we faced some great competition and the guys responded really well. Times were pretty good today, but I was much more pleased with how the guys raced; they made smart moves and went for the wins when possible. Dominic and Ishaan did great for their first college races. Those two joined the team just yesterday, so I was impressed with how they handled themselves. Xander and Ian ran great in their heat and dominated it. Spencer had the race of the day for us."

"This race give us a lot to look forward to with this track season," associate head coach Pete Cushman said of the women. "I'm mostly pleased with the mindset of our student-athletes right now. We did a good job focusing on competing against the field and not getting caught up with the watch. This was some solid racing coming off of finals week, and I think that is a good sign of things to come."
