Olivero Sets Two Track & Field Program Records to Cap Regular Season

Olivero Sets Two Track & Field Program Records to Cap Regular Season

AZUSA, Calif./SAN JOSE, Calif. — Xander Olivero started off the final weekend of regular-season competition with a 10,000-meter program record for men's track & field on Friday night. Less than 36 hours later, he crossed the finish line for another program record at 3,000 meters on Sunday morning.

Olivero's 10k 29:27.36 Friday at the Azusa Pacific Last Chance Twilight marked his second-straight program record and second-straight win at that distance. His 3k 8:13.85 Sunday at the SCU vs SMC Bay Area Dual was more than seven seconds faster compared to his previous outdoor program-record mark from 2020.

The APU meet also featured three Broncos that became the third-fastest runners in program history at their respective distances. Ian Twyman posted a 10k 30:02.14 to take third place in the field of 18, Harvey Chilcott ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 8:55.92 to finish in fourth place of 18 and Daniela Camacho registered an 11:18.24 in the steeple. Chilcott's mark is the 37th-best in the NCAA West Region this season.

In races that featured both the Broncos and Gaels on Sunday, Santa Clara produced the top finisher among the two programs in four of seven events at Terry Ward Track: Josh Simboli at 800 meters, Hayley Harrison at 1,500 meters, Olivero at 3,000 meters and Santa Clara's 'C' team in the men's 4x400-meter relay.

The team totaled 22 PRs, including 11 new times for the program's top 10 lists between the two meets.

FROM THE COACHES

Head coach Felipe Montoro on the men: "This weekend was a great representation of what this season has meant for our team. It took a lot of hard work from a lot of people to get here. Our team competed all year with a sense of real gratitude and a genuine understanding of how nothing is certain. We were able to live in the moment and I think we enjoyed competing more than any other season I can remember.

"Xander had an amazing weekend and he thoroughly deserved it. His competitive drive and his confidence are at an all-time high. Harvey ran a phenomenal race at APU in the steeplechase to punch his ticket to the NCAA west regional meet. Ian and Kyle also ran very well down there to close out outstanding seasons.

"At Bellarmine (dual meet), I thought the men's mile was outstanding across the board and the guys competed well in the 3k to join Xander in having a great performance. Hayelom also had his best race of the season."

Associate head coach Pete Cushman on the women: "Just a few months ago, we weren't on campus, we weren't practicing together, and any kind of season was in doubt. Through that adversity and uncertainty emerged a team united, grateful and prepared. I couldn't be more proud with how the season unfolded.

"This last meet of the year was an opportunity to celebrate this season in our own back yard and finish with one last strong effort. It was another chance to run as a group and see what we are capable of achieving."
