SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara baseball team dropped its second straight game Friday night with a 2-0 shutout from Loyola Marymount in the 2009 West Coast Conference opener. The Broncos dropped to 10-9 on the season and 0-1 in WCC play, while the Lions improved to 14-12 overall and 1-0 in league action.

Senior RHP Lee Roberts (2-0) pitched a complete game shutout for the win. It was the Lions first complete game shutout since 2006. In nine innings, he struck out seven Broncos and allowed six hits. The loss went to junior RHP Nate Garcia (4-2). He tossed seven innings and struck out nine batters. He gave up five hits and allowed both LMU runs, one of which was unearned.

At bat for the Broncos, Brady Fuerst was 2-for-4 with two doubles. He pushes his hitting streak to 14 games and has a team-best 12 doubles thus far.

The contest began as a pitchers battle. The Broncos got the first hit of the game in the second inning as Fuerst doubled down the left field line. The two teams only combined for six hits in the first five innings and left seven runners stranded on base.

Then in the sixth inning, LMU took a 1-0 lead as WCC Co-Player of the Week Angelo Songco scored the first run of the game. He was driven home by a base-hit from Trevor Gee. The second and final run of the game was then plated in the seventh inning. Shon Roe walked to lead-off the inning and then scored on a groundout to second from Ryan Hawthorne.

SCU and LMU continue WCC action in game two of the series on Saturday, Mar. 28 at 6 p.m. The third and final game of the series will be played on Sunday, Mar. 29 at 1 p.m. All games this weekend will be played at Schott Stadium.
