SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara freshman Jon Hughes earned high school All-America honors as EA Sports announced its 2008 All-American First team. Hughes was one of six Californians named to the list.
"It is a well deserved honor for Jon," said Santa Clara head coach Mark O'Brien. "We are looking forward to having him as a part of our team. If his work ethic and attitude remain strong, he will definitely make an impact on our Bronco program."
A finalist for Mr. Baseball State Player of the Year, the Morgan Hill native led his team to a second straight CIF Central Coast Section Div. I title last season. As a hitter, the 6-foot-3 Hughes batted .432 with 10 doubles, one home run and 35 RBI. As a pitcher, he went 14-1 with a 0.82 ERA. Hughes, who earned the wins in his team's final two games, was named the San Jose Mercury News and San Francisco Chronicle Player of the Year.
