SCU Baseball Battles San Jose State Wednesday

    SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara baseball travels down The Alameda Wednesday to bring the season series with San Jose State to a close. The Broncos and Spartans will take the field at 6 p.m. at Municipal Stadium. The third and final game of the series was originally scheduled for March 1 but was rescheduled due to inclement weather. SJSU won the series with victories in the first two games.

    Last Time Out
    The Broncos faced a tough three-game sweep to the Bulldogs of Gonzaga last weekend in West Coast Conference action. Friday and Saturday's battles came down to the final few innings, with SCU being edged 6-5 and 12-10, respectively. On Saturday, senior Kyle Van Dusen hit his first career home run. On Sunday, the Zags pulled out an 11-1 win. The Broncos' lone run came on a home run from junior catcher Geoff Klein.

    Bronco Watch
    Klein continues to lead the team with a .386 batting average, five home runs and 45 RBIs. Junior shortstop Jon Karcich took over the team lead with 19 doubles. He hit three against Gonzaga on Friday. He is also tied for first on the team with Matt Long with 29 runs. Long also has five triples on the year and three home runs. On the mound, Nate Garcia leads with a 3.23 ERA and a 6-3 record. He has tossed 75.1 innings and struck out 78 batters.

    Scouting San Jose State
    The Spartans enter the weekend with a 29-14 overall record. Jason Martin leads the team with 40 runs, while Jacob Bruns has 11 doubles and five home runs thus far. He also leads the team with 32 RBIs and a .402 batting average. As a team, SJSU has a 4.14 ERA. Tyler Heil is 3-0 with a 2.16 ERA, while David Berner is 6-1 with a 2.47 ERA and 69 strikeouts.

    Last Time vs. San Jose State
    The Broncos and Spartans last met on Feb. 28 in game two of the series at Stephen Schott Stadium. SJSU posted a 10-7 victory and Peterson got the win. In one of Tommy Medica's last games before his season-ending injury, he went 4-for-4 with two runs. Klein posted a game and season-high four RBIs.

    All-Time vs. San Jose State
    Wednesday's contest marks the 199th meeting of the two programs. Santa Clara leads the all-time series 117-81-0.

    On Deck
    The Broncos continue non-conference action with a four-game series against the Aztecs of San Diego State. It is Santa Clara's final home weekend series of the season. The Broncos and Aztecs open with a 6 p.m. first pitch on Friday, May 1. The series continues with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 2 beginning at 1 p.m. The Broncos will honor their eight graduating seniors prior to first pitch.
