Medica, Simon Pick Up Third Preseason All-America Honor

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara junior catcher Tommy Medica and sophomore pitcher Thain Simon were named to the 2009 CollegeBaseballInsider.com Preseason All-American teams, it was announced Tuesday. Medica earned second team honors, while Simon was named an honorable mention. It was also announced that Simon was named to the NCBWA Preseason Stopper of the Year watch list.

Earlier this season, both Medica and Simon were named to the Louisville Slugger and RecruitingCloser.com Preseason All-American teams.

Medica, a unanimous All-WCC honoree in 2008, led Santa Clara in on base percentage and tied for second in double (15) and ranked second in triples (2) and walks. As a freshman in 2007, he received three All-America honors and was a unanimous All-WCC selection. Medica rides a career and team-best 29 game hitting streak into the 2009 season that began on April 5, 2007 against Portland and includes 25 runs, six doubles, two triples, four home runs and 26 RBIs. During the summer, Medica help the Harwich Mariners to the Cape Cod Baseball League Championship, their first title in 21 years. He went 2-for-4 in the championship game.

Simon received three All-America honors after his rookie season as he was named to Baseball America's Freshman All-America second team, and to the Louisville Slugger's and NCBWA Freshman All-America teams. The right-handed pitcher from Toronto was also named the West Coast Conference's top freshman, the Broncos first since 2000. For the season, Simon was 9-2, starting the year in the bullpen and registering two saves on the WCC opening weekend against San Diego. He received WCC Co-Pitcher of the week honors for his performance. Simon moved into the rotation in April against Gonzaga and picked up win No. 9 against Loyola Marymount after tossing a season-high 7 2/3 innings and tying his season-best eight strikeouts. During the summer, Simon played for Team Canada. In mid-December, Simon was named to the Wallace Award watch list.

The Broncos open the 2009 season at the N.C. State Tournament in Raleigh, N.C., on Friday, Feb. 20 against the Musketeers of Xavier. First pitch is scheduled for 8 a.m. PT. Santa Clara opens its home scheduled on Wednesday, Feb. 25 against California. Game time slated for 6 p.m. at Stephen Schott Stadium.
