SAN DIEGO - The third-seed Santa Clara men's tennis exacted revenge against sixth-seed Saint Mary's in the opening round of the West Coast Conference Tournament with a 4-3 comeback victory at the Aztec Tennis Complex on the campus of San Diego State. Guillaume Dalmasso rebounded from a set down to record the match clincher at 3-all to send the Broncos to the semifinals where they will face second-seed Pepperdine on Friday at 1:30 p.m. PT.
Last month, the Gaels came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Broncos 4-3 in Moraga. However, on Thursday, it was Santa Clara (16-9) that took the last two matches to send the Gaels packing home.
Playing on court two, Dalmasso dropped the first set to Diego Jarry 3-6 but won the next two sets 6-3, 7-5 to complete the Bronco rally.
Christian Lerby set the stage for Dalmasso with his win atop the singles lineup as he downed James Watt in three sets 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 that evened the team score at 3-all.
Santa Clara got off to a strong start picking up the doubles point and the first singles match to take a 2-0 lead.
Mann Shah and Santiago Hinojosa secured the doubles point beating Felipe Rincon and Mathis Moysan 6-4.
In singles play, Hinojosa bested Rincon 6-2, 6-3 on court five but the Gaels reeled off three-straight singles wins to turn the match in favor of them before Lerby and Dalmasso's heroics.
