CLAREMONT, Calif. - Santa Clara men's water polo split its opening two games at the Gary Troyer Tournament on Friday.
The Broncos defeated Wagner, 10-8, at before falling at Pomona Pitzer, 15-12.
The two-day event concludes Saturday with the Broncos playing Navy and McKendree.
GAME ONE: Santa Clara 10, Wagner 8
Oliver Fodor had a game-high four goals for Wagner. His goal with 3:37 left in the third quarter snapped a 5-all tie, but the Broncos (7-5) posted the next three goals, all in the next 1:08.
Eldredge's strike with the extra attacker made it a 8-6 advantage, Fodor scored 17 seconds later.
Dominick Kirk's 5-meter penalty goal with 1:00 left in the third restored the two-goal lead.
The game was tied six times and neither team was able to take advantage with the extra attacker. The Broncos converted just once in seven attempts and the Seahawks (6-10) were 1-for-6.
GAME TWO: Pomona-Pitzer 15, Santa Clara 12
Dylan Elliott had five goals and Adam Gross scored three times for host Pomona-Pitzer which held off a late rally in a 15-12 win over Santa Clara.
Elliott scored twice in a stretch of five straight goals which snapped a tie and gave the Sagehens (10-6) an 8-3 cushion midway through the second quarter.
The lead grew to 13-5 in the third quarter on Elliott's fifth goal, but the Broncos tallied the next four markers.
Guinn's strike cut the deficit to 13-9 with 6:45 left in regulation, but Andrew Plaschke and Jack Mallery quickly answered with back-to-back goals for Pomona-Pitzer.
- Matt Peterson, Jake Taylor, Blake D'Souza, Chase Raisin, Dominick Kirk and Cody Ferguson started both games.
- Chase Zamborelli earned the win in net against Wagner, posting 13 blocks. Sean Tehaney suffered the loss vs. Pomona-Pitzer, posting 12 saves.
