SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Blazo Mitrovic had five goals and David Carrasco scored three for Loyola Marymount which edged Santa Clara men's water polo, 13-12, on Saturday.
In a game tied nine times with four leads changes, the Broncos looked poised to post a Western Water Polo Association victory on Senior Day, but the Lions (10-12, 6-2) scored twice in the final 2 minutes to claim the win.
Blake D'Souza, one of seven seniors recognized prior to the game, had three goals and two assists, and Caedmon Fisher scored twice and had two assists for Santa Clara (12-14, 2-6).
Goals by D'Souza and Jack Gannaway 21 seconds apart midway through the fourth quarter erased a 11-10 LMU lead.
Mitrovic was excluded from the game with just more than 4 minutes left, but the Lions was still able to find enough offense.
Bruno Salonikios scored with 1:48 left to tie the game at 12-all and Daniel Roth delivered the game-winner with 18 seconds remaining.
Santa Clara had one final chance, but a shot from Ford Eldredge was blocked before it reached LMU goaltender Robert Halligan, who was credited with nine saves.
Neither team led by more than two goals in the game.
The Broncos erased a 4-2 lead and forged ahead late in the second quarter.
Fisher's goal with 2:35 remaining before halftime pushed Santa Clara into a 6-5 lead.
Exclusion goals from D'Souza and Chase Raisin 36 seconds apart midway through the third extended the Santa Clara lead to 8-6, but Carrasco and Mitrovic quickly delivered markers to tie the game.
The Broncos scored six of 15 times with the extra attacker and the Lions were 6-for-14.
NOTES
- Ford Eldredge, Jake Taylor, Blake D'Souza, Chase Raisin, Dominick Kirk and Cody Ferguson started along with Sean Tehaney in goal. Tehaney was credited with nine saves.
