Men's Water Polo Knocked Off by Fresno Pacific

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Bodhi Bowden had five goals, including three during a key third-quarter flurry, to lead Fresno Pacific to a 10-7 victory over Santa Clara men's water polo on Wednesday afternoon.

Dominick Kirk scored three times and Blake D'Souza tallied two goals for the Broncos (9-6, 1-1) in the Western Water Polo Association game.

Kirk's first goal gave Santa Clara a 4-3 lead early in the third quarter, but the Sunbirds (4-11, 2-1) scored six of the next seven.

Bowden score three times in the final 4 minutes of the period with his strike with 54 seconds left pushing the lead to 9-5.

Goalie Clay Maroney was the backbone of the Fresno Pacific defense, posting 17 blocks, many from point blank range.

Kirk's final goal cut the deficit to 10-7 with 4:32 left in the game, but Maroney followed with four of his stops.

NOTES

  • Matt Peterson, Jake Taylor, Blake D'Souza, Chase Raisin, Dominick Kirk and Cody Ferguson started, along with Chase Zamborelli in net. Zamborelli was credited with 10 saves.
  • Fresno Pacific scored on all three of its 5-meter penalty shots and Santa Clara connected on both of its attempts. The Broncos were 0-for-6 on the power play and the Sunbirds 1 of 4.
  • The game was originally scheduled to be played in Fresno, but smoke from wildfires in the area made the air quality unplayable.

ALUMNI GAME
The Broncos will welcome back many of their former players Saturday for the annual Alumni game, which is part of the school's Grand Reunion weekend. The game begins at 10 a.m. in Sullivan Aquatic Center.
