SANTA CLARA, Calif. - A stirring comeback by Santa Clara men's water polo came up just short in its opener of the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament.

Before a packed Sullivan Aquatic Center, the Broncos rallied from three goals down in the fourth quarter to tie Princeton, but George Caras scored with 9 seconds left to send the Tigers to a 12-11 victory on Friday.

Keller Maloney tallied four goals and Caras, Mitchell Cooper and Joan Coloma scored twice apiece for the Tigers (17-5).

Ford Eldredge had a career-best four goals and Zach Fales two for the Broncos (10-9) who also erased a four-goal deficit before the fourth-quarter rally.

Caras' first goal extended the Princeton lead to 6-2 early in the second quarter, but the Broncos chipped away with help from an unlikely contributor.

Goalie Sean Tehaney scored his first-career goal. His long toss found the back of the net with 1 second left in the second quarter to trim the lead to 6-4.

Exclusion goals from Eldredge and Bennett Stafford knotted the game in the third quarter.

Cooper's strike 30 seconds into the fourth quarter gave the Tigers a 10-7 advantage.

Eldredge's second goal cut the deficit to 10-8 and he scored again with 36 seconds left to tie the game at 11-all.

Caras answered with the eventual game-winner on the ensuing possession.

The Broncos called timeout but were unable to get off a shot on their final possession.

California Baptist defeated Brown, 18-14 in the opening game of the day.

Harvard cruised past Fresno Pacific, 23-9, in the second of three contests.

The day also featured the completion of the cross country, fundraising biking expedition by the family and friends of Julian Fraser, the former Santa Clara water polo player who passed in 2017.

His father, Alec, and friend James Meehan biked from Connecticut to California during the last two months, helping raise money for cancer research.

ABOUT THE JULIAN FRASER MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT
The Santa Clara water polo community lost one its own in the spring of 2017 with the passing of men's player Julian Fraser. The two-year member of the program touched many around him in his short life. In 2017, in recognition, the water polo program renamed the annual Rodeo Tournament as the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, a three-day event which features teams from both sides of the country. Fraser was beloved by coaches, teammates and the Santa Clara University community. He had a true joy for the sport, he was a fierce competitor and enjoyed the camaraderie with his teammates. This annual tournament is a fitting way to honor and remember him.
