Men's Water Polo Drops Heartbreaker at Air Force

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Gavin Jones had three goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to help Air Force outlast Santa Clara men's water polo, 13-12, in Sunday's Western Water Polo Association matchup.

Grant Snyder and Ian Christie each had three goals for the Falcons (16-3, 5-1) who scored three of the final four goals after surrendering the final two of regulation.

Cody Ferguson scored three times and the Broncos (10-8, 1-3) also got two goals apiece from Patrick Guinn, Blake D'Souza, Chase Raisin and Bennett Stafford.

Raisin's two strikes came in the final 3 minutes of regulation to help Santa Clara overcome a 10-8 deficit.

Ferguson gave the Broncos an 11-10 lead early in the first overtime but Sam Fuller and Jones scored 28 seconds apart for the Falcons.

Stafford tied the game with 28 seconds left in the first extra session.

The go-ahead goal from Jones came with 2:16 left on a feed from Christie.

Santa Clara had chances to tie down the stretch.

Dominick Kirk had his shot blocked with 52 seconds remaining.

The Broncos got the ball back with 22 seconds to go and got the final shot, but Ford Eldredge's attempt with 4 seconds left missed the mark.

A.J. Kuypers had 13 saves for the Falcons to earn the win.

NOTES

Ford Eldredge, Jake Taylor, Blake D'Souza, Chase Raisin, Dominick Kirk and Cody Ferguson started, along with Sean Tehaney in goal. Tenhaney was credited with 12 saves. He had three stops in the final 35 seconds of the first overtime to help preserve a 12-all tie.

The  Broncos will serve as host to the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament from Friday through Sunday.
