by Gavin Hall, Santa Clara Athletics Media Relations Student Assistant

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Santa Clara women's golf was able to get both rounds in before the sunset in San Joaquin Valley to complete their first day 39-over 311-304--615 at the Valley Invitational. They are currently sitting in 8th place within the field that features only two schools outside of California.

Graduate student Claire Choi neared the top 10 after going 6-over 73-77--150 to lead the team with a tie for 11th. Junior Inara Sharma (79-74--153) came back after a more difficult first round and is sitting in a tie for 24th. Sophomore Borina Sutikto (78-76--154) is sitting in a tie for 30th and like Choi and Sharma, was able to contribute both of her rounds to the team. Freshman Audrey Brust (81-79--160) was able to get a birdie on her card in the second round and is in a tie for 53rd while Graduate transfer Valentina Gilly (86-77--163) was able to contribute to the team total after a solid second round. Playing as an individual, Maddie Wu (75-77--152) had a strong showing today and is in a tie for 19th.

USF leads the tournament with a cumulative score of 15-over 591 as they showed an incredible improvement of 17 shots between the two rounds to post a sub-par second round as a team. UC Davis' Elvira Rastvortseva (73-71--144) leads the field. As a team, Santa Clara is only five shots from breaking into the top five and will look to improve upon their position in the final round tomorrow.
