Broncos Battle Through Conditions On First Day Of WCC Championship

by Gavin Hall, Santa Clara Athletics Media Relations Student Assistant

BREMERTON, Wash. - With an overcast turned rainy day, temperatures that did not break 50 degrees, and recent changes to the lineup, there were a lot of factors that could have hindered play for the Broncos today. Despite these, Santa Clara women's golf posted solid rounds between even par and 5-over to stay in the mix at the WCC Championship.

Leading the team today as she always does was Claire Choi who came out with an even par round of 72 that included just two bogeys and two birdies; she is now sitting in a tie for 7th out of the 25-player field. Making just her third appearance as a Bronco and replacing Inara Sharma in the lineup today was Rachael Wang. She returned firing, posting a 1-over 73 and avoiding a double bogey to end up in a tie for 9th.

Looking to cap off an incredible opening season with Santa Clara, Audrey Brust opened with a 3-over 75 with just one double bogey blunder on the card; she is sitting in a tie for 16th. Continuing her career as a Bronco and in her eighth start of the season, Lauren Shew posted an opening round 5-over 77. She went out on the front-nine in 4-over then came in on the back-nine in just 1-over with two birdies, she is in 20th place. Sophomore Borina Sutikto unfortunately had to withdraw today and therefore did not get her first round in.

Santa Clara is currently sitting in 5th place out of the five teams after a first round cumulative score of 9-over 297 but is only three shots off of third place, Gonzaga. BYU leads the field after opening with a 5-under 283 and has a seven shot cushion on second place, Pepperdine. The Broncos will tee off at the same time as today, 7:30 AM PT, tomorrow, this time playing in twosomes alongside their competitors just up State Route 82 from San Jose, the San Francisco Dons.
