Sharma's Career Day Pushes Broncos To 2nd At NGI

MARICOPA, Ariz. - Santa Clara women's golf had by-far the best round of the day among the 10-team field at the National Golf Invitational, turning in a 3-over 291 to make a huge climb up the leaderboard. The Broncos jumped all the way up from ninth to second with the big round and are just five strokes behind the leader, Penn State, with the final round still to be played on Sunday.

SCU's total was six strokes better than Penn State's 297 for the lowest round of the day and is tied for the third-lowest round total for the event so far.

One of the driving catalysts for the Broncos' success on Saturday was Inara Sharma, who carded a new career-low of 69 (-3) and moved up to a tie for fourth at even par. She tallied five total birdies for the day, including three-straight on Nos. 7-9. The 69 is tied for the third-lowest by a Bronco individual this season.

Claire Choi also shook off Friday's slow start by turning in a 1-under 71 that included six birdies. She jumped up into a tie for 10th at 3-over 76-71--147.

Audrey Brust (73-77--150) is tied for 20th, Borina Sutikto (77-74--151) is 25th and Lauren Shew (75-78--153) is tied for 29th to round out the Bronco lineup.

Penn State holds the team lead at 9-over 585 and is in line to win the individual title with Michelle Cox holding a two-stroke lead at 6-under 67-71--138.

The National Golf Invitational concludes tomorrow. Play begins at 7:30 a.m. PT.
