SAN JOSE, Calif. – No.5 Santa Clara women's soccer opened the 2022 campaign with a 1-0 win at San Jose State on Thursday night.
The Broncos (1-0) dominated on the offensive end creating chances throughout but couldn't break through until a penalty kick by Izzy D'Aquila in the 65th minute. The Spartans' (0-1) physical defensive play was a major factor in keeping the match close.
NOTES
- Santa Clara held a 19-4 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal.
- Lucy Mitchell (5 shots and 1 on goal), D'Aquila (4 and 2), and Colby Barnett (3 and 1) led the offensive charge.
- The Broncos had nine corners while surrendering just one.
- Kylie Foutch made one save while picking up the clean sheet.
- Holly Furphy started in her collegiate debut with Farrah Walters and Leah O'Brien also seeing their first college minutes.
- Santa Clara is now 20-0 all-time against San Jose State.
- This was Jerry Smith's 524th career win.
- The crowd of 1,351 was the biggest in Spartan Soccer Complex's history. It beat the previous record by 508 fans, also a season-opener against the Broncos in 2018.
