Women's Soccer Battles No. 6 UCLA But Falls Behind Early Goal

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – An early goal was the lone tally as Santa Clara women's soccer fell to No. 6 UCLA 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Stevens Stadium.

The Broncos (1-3) did a good job of possessing the ball and connecting passes from the back but couldn't do the same when they got to the attacking third. Part of the issues stemmed from the Bruins (3-0) impressive defensive performance. Every time a Santa Clara got the ball, it seemed like three defenders were on her.

UCLA had its moments on offense and took advantage of one in the early going.  Sunshine Fontes got a ball from Ally Lemos and hit it on the ground just inside the left post from just outside the box.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara registered six shots and put two on goal.
  • The Broncos had the only two corner kicks of the match.
  • Both Izzy D'Aquila and Colby Barnett attempted two shots with Annie Karich and Ellie Glenn getting off one each.
  • Felicity Baker got the start and made four saves.
  • UCLA's first year head coach Margueritte Aozasa played for Jerry Smith at Santa Clara from 2008-11. She was a two-time captain.
  • Santa Clara is now 6-7-2 all-time vs. UCLA.
