2022 NORCAL KICKOFF TOURNAMENT CENTRAL | HOSTED BY UC DAVIS | HOSTED BY SACRAMENTO STATE

DAVIS, Calif. - Hannah Edwards tossed a two-hit shutout in Santa Clara softball's 3-0 season opening win over UC Davis on Friday afternoon at La Rue Field.

Edwards dominated the Aggies lineup allowing just three base runners on two singles and a hit batsman as none of them reached third base.  The redshirt freshman struck out four to record her second career shutout.

The game was a pitcher's duel between Edwards and Aggies (0-1) hurler Kenedi Brown through the first five innings as the teams combined for just three total hits.  However, in the sixth, the Broncos (1-0) got to Brown putting up three runs on three hits and was aided by three Aggie errors.

Freshman Morgan Salmon got things started for the Broncos hitting a triple, her first career hit, to the right center gap.  Sammy Needham singled home Salmon to give SCU a 1-0 lead.  After a couple of Aggie errors that put runners in scoring position, freshman Nina Taylor came in as a pinch-hitter and delivered an RBI single to make it 2-0.  Santa Clara tacked on a third run on another Aggie error to give Edwards a three run cushion.

UC Davis tried to answer in the home half of the sixth when Tatum Wentworth led the inning off with a single.  However, she was erased off the base paths when Edwards induced a double play to end the inning.

Edwards retired all three batters in the seventh, the fourth such frame of the game, to close out the win.

Brown also went the distance for the Aggies allowing seven hits and three runs, just one earned, while walking two and striking out four.

Salmon and Needham each collected two hits.  Wentworth and Leah Polson had a hit each for the Aggies.
