Softball Loses Twice on Saturday at Silicon Valley Classic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -  Santa Clara softball lost twice on Saturday on the second day of the Silicon Valley Classic I Tournament.  The Broncos lost to Sacramento State 5-4 in extra innings at SCU Softball Stadium in the morning game and fell to San José State 12-4 at Spartan Softball Stadium in the night game.

GAME 1: Sacramento State 5 - Santa Clara 4 (eight innings)
Santa Clara's comeback effort fell short against Sacramento State, losing 5-4 in extra innings.

Trailing by four runs, the Broncos (7-8) scored a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at 4-all.  In the eighth with the international tiebreak rule in effect, Sacramento State pushed a run across on Nikki Barboza's sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run.

Santa Clara had another opportunity to tie the game in the home half of the eight when Ashley Trierweiler singled to left with Sarah Ellersick at second base.  Ellersick was waved in but was thrown out at home on a throw from Hornets leftfielder Samantha Parish that ended the game.

Amber Rodriguez got the Hornets on the scoring column in the third with a solo home run as part of a three run inning.  They added another run in the fourth to go up 4-0.

The Broncos got RBI hits from Morgan Salmon and Lauren Bryson in the sixth to half the Sacramento State (5-7) lead.  They followed with two more runs in the seventh courtesy of Regan Dias' RBI single and a squeeze bunt by Sammy Needham that knotted the game at 4-all.

Marissa Bertuccio (3-1) got the win tossing a scoreless eighth, helped by Parish' defensive play.

Lauren Anderson (0-1) who threw the final five innings took the loss.

Trierweiler had a game-high three hits.

GAME 2: San José State 12 - Santa Clara 4 (six innings)
Santa Clara (7-9) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead but San José State scored 12 unanswered runs to win 12-4 in a six inning run-rule game.

Three of the four Bronco runs came on Spartan errors and wild pitch sandwiching an RBI triple by Ashley Trierweiler.

San José State (7-5) score a run each in the second and third frames and tied it up in the fourth on a two run home run by Alyssa Graham.

The game was tied at 4-all heading to the sixth when the Spartans tallied eight runs on five hits and three Bronco walks to run-rule the game.

Regan Dias (1-2) who came in relief in the sixth was the losing pitcher while Jenessa Ullegue (4-0) picked up the win throwing four scoreless innings.
