Softball Drops A Pair Against BYU

PROVO, Utah – After losing the first game of the doubleheader to BYU 20-1, Santa Clara softball responded with a strong effort in the second game but fell just short 3-2.

GAME 1: BYU 20 - Santa Clara 1 (five innings)
BYU (32-10, 5-2 WCC) racked up 19 hits with 10 of those coming in the 13-run fourth inning to take the series opener 20-1 over Santa Clara (18-24, 4-3 WCC) that was run ruled after five innings.

Eight of the hits went for extra bases as Marissa Chavez led the Cougars offensive charge going 3-for-3 with six RBIs including a three-run home run.  Seven Cougars had multiple hits and eight had an RBI.

Regan Dias belted a solo home run in the top of the first against Cougar starter Autumn Moffat-Korth but thats all the scoring the Broncos could muster.

Moffat-Korth (13-7) allowed two hits and one run over four innings to pick up the win.

Dias (4-10) took the loss for the Broncos surrendering seven hits, nine runs over 2 2/3 innings.

GAME 2: BYU 3 - Santa Clara 2
Two mistakes by Hannah Edwards proved costly in otherwise a stellar performance by the redshirt freshman hurler against a lethal BYU lineup.

Violet Zavodnik and Martha Epenesa each homered off Edwards to account for all three Cougars (33-10, 6-2) runs in the 3-2 win.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Zavodnik took an 0-1 offering from Edwards and deposited it over the right field fence to give BYU a 2-1 lead.

In the fifth, Epenesa homered on the first pitch to push the Cougar lead out to 3-1.

Santa Clara (18-25, 4-4) got its run in the top of the third on Dias' RBI single.  They cut into the Cougars lead in the sixth when Ashley Trieweiler led the inning off with a single off starter Chloe Temples and moved to third on Dias' long single off the right field fence, just missing out her second home run of the day.  With Trierweiler advancing to third on the play, Ferreira brought her home with an RBI grounder get the Broncos within a run at 3-2.

Moffat-Korth came in relief in the seventh and surrendered a two out hit before closing out the game inducing Cameron McGinnis to a grounder to pick up the save.

Temples (12-3) won her 12th game of the season surrendering four hits, two runs, a walk over six innings with seven strikeouts.

Edwards (6-7) took the loss giving up three runs on five hits over six frames.  She struck out four Cougars and walked two.
