2022 NORCAL KICKOFF TOURNAMENT CENTRAL | HOSTED BY UC DAVIS | HOSTED BY SACRAMENTO STATE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball dropped two games on Saturday on the second day of the NorCal Kickoff.  The Broncos (1-2) fell to Sacramento State 6-1 in the day's opener and 9-0 to San José State in the afternoon.

GAME 1: Sacramento State 6 - Santa Clara 1
Carley Morfey drove in three runs and Lexie Webb tossed a three-hit complete game to help tournament co-host Sacramento State defeat Santa Clara 6-1 in the morning game.

Morfey drove in the first three Hornets runs all coming with two outs.

The Hornets (1-1) took advantage of a pair of Bronco errors in the first inning to jump to an early 1-0 lead against Broncos starter Regan Dias.  In the frame, Kennedy Echols and Webb each reached base on infield errors.  With two outs, Morfey singled to third bringing Echols home as Sacramento State scored without the ball leaving the infield.

In the third, Dias retired the first two Hornets batters but gave up three-straight hits including a two-RBI double to Morfey.

With the Broncos trailing 3-0 in the top of the fourth, Ashley Trierweiler legged out a single for the first hit off Webb.  Trierweiler advanced to second on an error before coming home on Morgan Salmon's RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1.

Sacramento State pushed the lead back out to three runs on Lewa Day's solo home run that led the fifth.  The Hornets added two more runs in the frame.

Webb (1-0) earned the win allowing one run on three hits, struck out five and did not issue a walk.  Webb also had two hits in the game as did Day.

Dias (0-1) took the loss for the Broncos giving up nine hits and six runs, five earned over five innings of work.

GAME 2: San José State 9 - Santa Clara 0 (6 innings)
Jenessa Ullegue recorded a two-hit shutout for San José State while the Spartan offense generated nine runs on 12 hits in the 9-0 victory over Santa Clara in six innings.

Five Spartans had multi-hits led by Jules Ronquillo who went 3-for-3 and three had multi-RBIs with Karizma Bergesen and Jilliam Figueroa each driving in three runs.

San Jose State (2-1) got on the board in the third inning on Trenity Edwards' RBI single against Broncos starter Zoe Straughn.  They added three runs in the fourth courtesy of Bergesen's two-RBI double and Figueroa's sacrifice fly to plate Bergesen.

The Spartans broke the game open in the sixth sending 10 players to the plate to score five runs on seven hits and two walks against Lauren Anderson and Kelsi Rice who came in relief.

Meanwhile, Ullegue (1-0) allowed a leadoff bunt single to Ashley Trierweiler in the first followed by a walk to Sammy Needham but escaped the inning.  She would go on to allow just one more hit, a single to Morgan Salmon, a walk and two hit batsmen the rest of the way to earn the win.

Straughn (0-1) who gave up five hits, four runs, two earned over five innings was saddled with the loss.
