Softball Drops Midweek Tilt to San José State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Four San José State pitchers combined to allow just one run in the Spartans 3-1 win over the Santa Clara softball on Wednesday in a nonconference game at SCU Softball Stadium.

Caroline Bowman, Ashley Goard, Lacie Ham and Jenessa Ullegue allowed eight hits, struck out five and did not issue a walk over seven innings.  The first three pitchers threw two innings each with Lacie Ham (4-8) picking up the win and Ullegue tossed a scoreless seventh to earn her second save of the season.

The Santa Clara (18-27) lineup notched a hit in every inning but could only push across a run in the fourth.  Sammy Needham hit a pinch-hit RBI single to plate Morgan Salmon who tripled earlier in the inning to tie the game up at 1-all.

San José State (21-27) got on the board in the third inning on Alyssa Graham's solo home run off Sage Hager who started in the circle for the Broncos.

The game remained a 1-all game until the sixth when Bronco reliever Hannah Edwards allowed two runners on, followed by a go-ahead RBI single to Jilliam Figueroa.  The Spartans added an insurance run on a fielding error to make it 3-1.

Edwards (6-8) took the loss giving up three hits and two runs, only one of which was earned, over three innings.
