SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Nevada won three straight 3-set matches to come from behind to defeat Santa Clara women's tennis 4-3 on Friday afternoon.
The match clincher came on court two in a battle between Milka Genkova and freshman Katherine Petty. The Bronco newcomer took the first set but dropped the next two sets and lost 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5.
The Broncos (0-1) got off to a strong start in the season opener picking up the doubles point on freshman JennaMarie Gordon and sophomore Giulia Hayer's clincher on court two. They defeated Carla Del Barrio and Anastasia Luneva 6-2 after the freshmen tandem of Petty and Finley Kalinic took care of Critina Moll Alles and Milka Genkova 6-1 on court one.
Santa Clara picked up two of next three singles points to go up 3-1 when Kalinic beat Del Barrio 6-1, 7-5 and junior Jamie Schroer handled Moll Alles 6-2, 6-3.
However, the match clincher would be elusive for the Broncos.
On court six, Mathilde Sarcelet beat freshman Varya Zlotnik 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 to narrow the team score to 3-2.
Anastasia Luneva would even the team score at 3-all with a win over Gordon on court one, 7-6 (11-9), 2-6, 6-4, before the match clincher by Genkova to help Nevada improve to 2-0 on the season.
