Volleyball Drops Conference Opener at Home to LMU

Santa Clara University Requirements for Indoor Events

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Loyola Marymount overcame fast starts by Santa Clara volleyball to take two of the first three sets before closing out with a strong fourth in the West Coast Conference opening win on Thursday night inside the Leavey Center.

Megan Rice (23 kills on .395 hitting) and Kari Geissberger (19 kills/nine digs) led the way for the Lions in the 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 25-15 victory.

Julia Sangiacomo and Michelle Shaffer each had 16 kills to lead the Broncos on .314 and .289 hitting, respectively.

The Lions (10-1, 1-0), who won their 10th-straight win, outhit the Broncos .319 to .222. 

The Broncos (4-7, 0-1) got off to a hot start taking a 7-1 lead in the first set but the Lions closed out with their own 7-1 scoring run, led by Geissberger's three kills, to take the set 25-22.

In the second set, the Broncos hit a blistering .464 to even the match at one set apiece. 

LMU took home the crucial third set on five kills by Rice after falling behind 9-1.

In the deciding set, the Lions led all the way behind eight kills by Geissberger.

The Broncos face Pepperdine at home on Saturday at 1 p.m.

NOTES

  • Michelle Shaffer (16) recorded her 10th match with double digit kills, most on the team. Julia Sangiacomo (16) had twin-figure kills for the ninth match.
  • Santa Clara recorded nine service aces to five for LMU.
  • Loyola Marymount now holds a 45-36 all-time lead in the series.

EVENT PROTOCOL - INDOOR
In response to evolving changes brought about by the COVID-19 Delta variant, Santa Clara University has recently updated its event policies. As we welcome patrons into our facilities, we share the following campus policy for indoor athletic events:

For athletic events held in seated indoor venues, SCU requires spectators to provide pre-attendance proof of vaccination verification OR proof of a negative PCR lab-based test within 72 hours of the event. Individuals under the age of 12 are exempt from providing proof of vaccination and testing. Click here for detailed instructions.

TICKETS
Tickets are available either online or at Leavey Center prior to the match. Purchase tickets online and avoid waiting at the arena box office which opens one hour prior to first serve. Questions may be directed to the Santa Clara Athletics ticket office from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at (408) 554-4660 or BroncoTickets@scu.edu. The ticket office also handles inquiries on group tickets.

PARKING
For weekday matches, the Leavey Center lot (see below for access), located on Accolti Way off El Camino Real, is free beginning one hour prior to first serve. Any other parking facility on campus will be subject to normal daily rates or restrictions, including the main structure, located adjacent to Stevens Stadium on Palm Drive.
