Meet the Future of Bronco Baseball — Class of 2020: Luke Genova

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Today, Bronco baseball announces the second member of its incoming freshman class for 2016-17, Luke Genova. The right-handed pitcher/third baseman currently attends Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, Calif.

"I chose Santa Clara because I felt it was the perfect fit," Genova said. "The coaching staff is amazing, the academics at Santa Clara are outstanding and I feel that I will be prepared for everything baseball in the future."

Genova hit .292 with two home runs and 26 RBIs for head coach Evan Chalmers and the Sailors as a junior in 2014-15. Following his sophomore season, Genova was named Second Team All-Sunset League. Newport Harbor participated in the CIF Southern Section wild card playoff game against Orange Lutheran that season.

"Luke Genova is a really dynamic athlete who has a chance to come in and make an impact both on the mound and in the lineup," associate head coach/recruiting coordinator Gabe Ribas said. "Luke really impressed us with his bat and then he got on the mound and showed an ability to throw strikes and make people miss as a closer.

"Luke comes from a great baseball family and his high baseball IQ is going to help him make a quick adjustment to the game at this level. The sky is the limit for Luke."

The 6-foot-2-inch, 205-pound prospect also plays football at Newport Harbor. Genova enjoys going to the beach, coaching and cooking.

Next week's future Bronco is Jake MacNichols.
