SANTA CLARA, Calif.  — Johnny York pitched a complete game shutout for Saint Mary's baseball as the Gaels defeated Santa Clara 1-0 Saturday night at Schott Stadium. The Broncos stranded runners in scoring position four times in the first five innings and five times overall in the West Coast Conference tilt.

Santa Clara has had five straight games decided by three runs or fewer — the Broncos are 2-3 in those contests.

York (W, 3-2) outdueled Santa Clara starter Steven Wilson (L, 2-1) for the first complete game shutout of his career. The lefthander allowed seven hits, struck out eight batters and did not issue a walk for the Gaels (15-9, 6-2 WCC). Saint Mary's has three complete game shutouts through the first three weekends of conference action.

The Broncos (11-14, 1-4 WCC) had only one batter reach base in the last four innings and two batters reach in the last five frames. Santa Clara put runners on first and second with no outs in the second, loaded the bases with one out in the third and got a pair of baserunners with two outs in the fourth, but did not score.

Wilson pitched his fourth straight quality start by throwing 7.0 innings with seven hits, two strikeouts and three walks. The redshirt junior held Saint Mary's to 2-for-16 (.125) with runners on base and 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.  He has conceded only four runs (three earned) over 27.2 innings in his last four starts for a 0.98 ERA during that span.

Kirtley led off the third inning with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and tagged up to third base after Eddie Haus flied out to center for the inning's first out. Kirtley scored the lone run of the game on a wild pitch in the dirt with Nate Nolan at the plate. Anthony Villa and Kirtley finished the night with two hits and two walks apiece; Grant Meylan led the Broncos with two hits.

GAME NOTES: First pitch was at 6:01 p.m. … time of the game was 2:23 … attendance was 417.
