Baseball Doomed by Big Fourth Inning at Nevada

RENO, Nev. — Santa Clara baseball scored the first two runs of Tuesday afternoon's contest at Nevada, and the Wolf Pack took command of the game with an 11-run fourth inning on its way to a 14-2 victory. 

The Broncos (5-4) strung together a two-out rally with four straight singles in the third, including RBI efforts from Stevie Berman and Jake Brodt. Berman has hit safely in all nine contests this season and Brodt finished 2-for-2 in the loss. Kert Woods hit a single and a double to extend his hitting streak to five games. 

Santa Clara starting pitcher Michael Bono threw 2.2 innings and allowed an earned run on four hits with a walk and a strikeout; Peter Hendron (L, 0-2) took the loss in relief. Nevada starter Zach Wilkins (W, 2-0) allowed two runs on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 7.0 innings. In the first relief appearance of his Santa Clara career, Ryan Budnick issued a 1-2-3 sixth and struck out one batter.

In the fourth, the Wolf Pack (4-5) sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs on eight hits. Six different batters drove in a run during that stretch, including Grant Fennel, who executed a squeeze bunt his first time up and walked in a run his second time up. Miles Mastrobuoni and TJ Friedl let the team with four hits apiece while Jordan Pierce and Brandon Evans each drove in three runs.

The Broncos return to the diamond Friday for a 5 p.m. first pitch to begin a four-game series at Washington.
