White Strikes out a Career-High 11; Baseball Falls to UMass Lowell

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Mitchell White struck out a career-high 11 batters for Santa Clara baseball in Friday night's contest against UMass Lowell, but the Broncos fell to the River Hawks 3-0 in the first of a four-game set. UMass Lowell pushed across the game's first run in the fifth and added two more in the eighth.

White has either matched or set a new career-best strikeout mark in each of his four outings this season.

Andrew Ryan (W, 3-0) dealt 8.0+ shutout innings for the River Hawks (5-3), and exited after Kyle Cortopassi reached on an error and John Cresto walked in a nine-pitch at-bat to start off the home ninth. UMass Lowell called on Brendan Long (SV, 3) out of the bullpen to face the potential game-tying run, and Long retired all three batters he faced to clinch the victory.

White (L, 1-2) struck out the side in the fourth and totaled seven strikeouts in his last three innings for the Broncos (6-7). UMass Lowell scored its only run against the Santa Clara starter on an single by Chris Sharpe in the fifth; the baseball hit off Bronco right fielder Grant Meylan and rolled into foul territory, allowing Steve Passatempo to score from first.

In the sixth, River Hawk right fielder Joe Consolmagno threw out Kyle Cortopassi on an attempted tag up at home after a fly out by Stevie Berman. Cortopassi led the Broncos with two hits; Consolmagno led all batters with three hits.

The visitors added a second run in the eighth when Michael Young's single up the middle deflected off of second base, allowing Zack Tower to score. Three batters later, Oscar Marchena singled through the right side on a hit and run play to drive in Young.

The Broncos and River Hawks will meet for a Saturday doubleheader to continue the series. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 11 a.m. and the nightcap will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1.
