SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Mitchell White spun 7.0 shutout frames and Kert Woods drove in two runs to help Santa Clara baseball defeat San Francisco 2-0 in the 2016 West Coast Conference opener Friday night from Schott Stadium. The Bronco starter set a single-game best mark with 12 strikeouts and Woods extended his hitting streak to six games as part of the victory.

The win marked Bronco head coach Dan O'Brien's 100th career victory at the helm of Santa Clara's program.

White (W, 2-2) pitched a pair of 1-2-3 innings and allowed six hits with no walks for the Broncos (8-8). The Dons (5-15) recorded four straight swinging strikeouts against White from the final out of the first through the end of the second. The San Jose native has set or matched his single-game strikeout record in all five outings this season; he tops all WCC pitchers with 48 strikeouts and a 1.34 ERA.

"Mitch was dominant. You can't really say enough about him," O'Brien said. "On the field, off the field, in the classroom — the kid's just an all-around winner."

TC Florentine set the table for the Broncos with two doubles and a triple; he entered the weekend with one extra-base hit in 2016. After Florentine hit a two-out double in the fourth, Kert Woods drove him in with an RBI triple to open the scoring. Two innings later, Woods hit an RBI single to bring home Stevie Berman and make the score 2-0. Woods, Berman and Kyle Cortopassi each had a pair of hits and the Broncos tallied five extra-base knocks on the night.

"Kert is consistent; you know what you're going to get every game," O'Brien said. "That's the trait of a true leader. He's the same guy day in and day out, and the entire team knows they can count on him."

Anthony Shew (L, 0-3) allowed two earned runs and struck out seven in 6.0 innings for San Francisco.  Santa Clara's Nick Medeiros struck out two in a scoreless eighth and Max Kuhns (SV, 6) retired the side in order to close the game down in the ninth. The Broncos have two shutout wins on the season — they blanked No. 24 Notre Dame 2-0 at Schott Stadium on Feb. 20.

The Broncos and Dons meet for Game 2 of the series Saturday at 6 p.m. Santa Clara's Steven Wilson (2-0, 3.26 ERA) faces off with San Francisco's Chase Gardner (0-2, 7.16 ERA).

GAME NOTES: First pitch was at 7:02 p.m. … time of the game was 2:33 … attendance was 200.
