Men's Basketball Plays at BYU on Thurday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball finishes off the road portion of the schedule this week, starting with Thursday's matchup against BYU.

Tipoff between the Broncos and No. 23/NR Cougars is set for 7 p.m. Mountain in Marriott Center.

Santa Clara (18-9, 5-7 West Coast Conference) has dropped its last thee, including Saturday's 65-59 home loss to Loyola Marymount as Eli Scott led all scorers with 19 and Jordan Bell posted 13 points and nine rebounds. Josip Vrankic scored 17, including 13 in the second half, Jalen Williams posted 14 points and Jaden Bediako recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Broncos.

Santa Clara, which plays at Pacific on Saturday, is 3-5 on the road this season.

BYU (21-7, 10-3) is 12-1 at home and has won its last six in a row overall, including Saturday's 72-71 road victory against San Diego.

QUICK HITS...
• Seven players are averaging at least 7.0 points, including four in double digits led by Trey Wertz (11.9 ppg), Josip Vrankic (11.9), Guglielmo Caruso (10.9) and DJ Mitchell (10.0). Keshawn Justice is averaging 8.9 points, Tahj Eaddy 8.2 and Jalen Williams 7.6. Vrankic leads the team in rebounding (5.4) and is one of three players averaging at least 5.0 per game. Mitchell is second at 5.3 and Caruso, who has played only briefly in one game during conference play, is at 5.1. Wertz is averaging a team-high 4.0 assists per game and Vrankic is second with 3.0.
• With a victory over Pacific on Jan. 18, Santa Clara matched its win total from last season. The 16-4 start was the best since 1994-95 when the mark was the same. The 14-2 opening to the season was the best since beginning a school-record 21-0 in 1968-69 on the way to a 27-2 mark and a trip to the NCAAs. The Broncos won at least 14 of 16 to begin a season for only fourth time in school history: 14-2 in 1930-31 and 15-1 in 1946-47.

YEAR FOUR UNDER SENDEK...
The Broncos are heading into the their 113th year, including fourth under Herb Sendek, who has been successful in each of his three previous head-coaching stops. With a resume that includes 18 postseason appearances and three conference coach of the year awards, Sendek, was one of the three youngest coaches with 400 or more career victories. Having led the Broncos to winning records in two of his three seasons, he is in his 26th season as a collegiate head coach with stops at Arizona State, North Carolina State and Miami (Ohio).

THE BYU SERIES...
In a series that began in 1951, BYU leads 31-6. The Cougars have won the last three, but had their 14-game winning streak in the series snapped in 2016-17. BYU owns a 16-1 series lead since joining the WCC for the 2011-12 season. Prior to 2016-17, the last victory for Broncos was a 66-64 win in Provo, Utah, on Dec. 2, 1972, though the teams only met once (Dec. 30, 1986 in the Cable Car Classic) in a 38-year span. BYU owns a 16-2 record in Provo.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES...
• Injuries are starting to take a toll and the one to Guglielmo Caruso has been the most impactful. He injured his lower right leg against Alcorn State (Dec. 29) and missed the next 10 games. Ezekiel Richards (ankle), who played in 10 games as a reserve, and Miguel Tomley (knee), who has not seen action, have been ruled out for the season. Juan Ducasse (ankle) and Giordan Williams (ankle) are recent additions to the injury list.
Josip Vrankic has hit double figures in scoring in eight of the last 10 games and averaged 15.7 points and 6.6 rebounds in that span.
• Over the last 14 contests, Trey Wertz is averaging 12.9 points on 69-for-125 from the field (55.2 percent), including 27 of 56 on 3-pointers (48.2 percent).
Jaden Bediako has taken over for Caruso in the starting lineup. During the last nine games, Bediako has averaged 10.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in 22.3 minutes.

All Broncos home games and West Coast Conference contests (not on an ESPN platform, CBS Sports Network or BYUtv) will also be streamed through WCC Network (local blackout restrictions apply for games broadcast over the air). As in the past two seasons, nearly all games can also be heard on either KDOW-AM 1220 or KTRB-AM 860. In addition, any of this year's games can also be heard on the Tunein app. Thursday's game can be heard through Tunein.
