No. 23 Women's Soccer Knocks Off No. 13 BYU on the Road, Smith Earns 500th Win

PROVO, Utah – No. 23 Santa Clara women's soccer went into Provo on Saturday and upset No. 13 BYU 2-1 behind a late goal to give head coach Jerry Smith his 500th career win. He becomes just the third NCAA women's soccer head coach with 500 Division I victories.

The match-winner came in the 88th minute off the foot of Julie Doyle who had snuck in behind the defense. After she controlled the ball, she took a few dribbles before knocking one over the goalkeeper Cassidy Smith's head and into the back of the net.

The Broncos (3-0, 3-0 WCC) went for quality of shots over quantity in the game. They attempted 10 shots and put seven of them on goal while the Cougars (4-3, 2-1 WCC) took 12 shots but put just four on target.

The scoring got going early when Santa Clara was called for a penalty in the box in the sixth minute. Mikayla Colohan took the chance and converted to give her team the early 1-0 lead.

Not long after, Kelsey Turnbow evened the score in the 13th minute on a beautiful goal. She dribbled into the box and stopped on a dime before hitting a shot over the keeper and inside the far post.

Marlee Nicolos made two saves for the Broncos. She is yet to allow a goal this season during the run of play.

Smith made five saves for the Cougars.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara is now 9-2-5 all-time against BYU.
  • Kelsey Turnbow remains one assist away from becoming the eighth Bronco with 25 goals and 25 assists in her career. She has 37 goals and 24 assists.
