Women's Soccer Has Impressive Showing in All-WCC Awards

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – After being seeded 11th in the NCAA Tournament, Santa Clara women's soccer cleaned up in the postseason All-West Coast Conference awards. Nine different Broncos were honored by the league.

For the second year in a row Alex Loera was named the WCC Defensive Player of the Year. For the third time in four years and second year in a row Santa Clara had the WCC Freshman of the Year in Sally Menti. Head coach Jerry Smith was also named co-Coach of the Year with Gonzaga's Chris Watkins. It is the seventh honor for Smith.

The Broncos also had a league-high four First Team All-WCC selections in Loera, Izzy D'Aquila, Julie Doyle, and Kelsey Turnbow. Menti was named Second Team with Ellie Glenn and Sofia Jones honorable mention. Menti and Marisa Bubnis were named All-Freshman.

Loera has helped lead a Santa Clara defense that has allowed just six goals in seven matches, good for 0.86 goals per game. The Broncos have allowed just 56 and 26 on target. Loera has one assist this year. This is her third-straight first team nod after being named Second Team and All-Freshman in 2017.

Turnbow has scored a team-high seven goals and is tied for the team-lead with four assists. She is tied for sixth nationally with 1.0 goals per game and fifth with 2.6 points per game. The 2017 WCC Freshman of the Year, this is Turnbow's fourth-straight First Team nod.D'Aquila has found the back of the net five times and added an assist. Last season she was the Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-WCC.

Doyle scored one goal with two assists. She made her one goal count, scoring the game-winner at then-No. 13 BYU in the final minutes. Last year she was Second Team and as a freshman was First Team and All-Freshman.

Menti has added four assists and scored a goal this year.

Jones has teamed with Loera on the backline to help anchor the defense. The senior has started every game the last three seasons.

Glenn has one assist this year and started the last five matches.

Bubnis has started each of the six games she has appeared in.
