No. 11 Women's Soccer Wins Wild Double Overtime Thriller at No. 24 Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. – For the last 22 years, Malibu has been a house of horrors for Santa Clara women's soccer, but Tuesday the No. 11 Broncos exorcised some demons and beat No. 24 Pepperdine 4-3 in double overtime to remain perfect on the year and in the driver's seat for a West Coast Conference title. It was the team's first win at Pepperdine since 1999, a streak of 10 losses in a row.

"I'm so proud of the team," Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith said. "Pepperdine is a very different soccer environment and field than we're used to at Santa Clara and credit goes to them because they've had our number on their field. The year we won the national championship, we didn't win on that field. We kind of got the monkey off our back a little bit today."

Kelsey Turnbow was the star of the day scoring two goals, one to tie the game late and one to win it. Izzy D'Aquila also added a goal and an assist. Of the seven goals scored, six were scored in the span of 15 minutes in the second half.

The winner came in the 105th minute off an assist from D'Aquila. After D'Aquila found Turnbow near the top of the box, Turnbow took a couple touches before finishing inside the left post for her team-leading fifth of the year.

The Broncos (4-0, 4-0 WCC) found themselves down 3-2 after having the lead twice but didn't panic and got the equalizer. A handball in the box gave them a penalty kick in the 80th minute and Turnbow calmly converted the chance to even it at 3-apiece.

"To have the game tied three times and have to go into overtime and still come away with a win took a lot of teamwork and showed the depth of our team," Smith said. "There were two or three times we could have folded and the team refused to lie down."

Santa Clara was trailing after the Waves (4-3-1, 3-1-1 WCC) scored two goals in three minutes.

The first came in the 76th when Erin Sinai sent a long ball into the box that Leyla McFarland leapt for and headed into the net to tie the score at 2-2.

Pepperdine then took the lead in the 79th. Aliyah Satterfield got a through ball from McFarland who was set up by Skylar Enge and beat Santa Clara keeper Marlee Nicolos one-on-one.

Nicolos finished the game with two saves but also got a little help from Emma Reeves who got to a ball that was slowly rolling to the net in the 53rd minute to keep it a scoreless march at the time.

The scoring started in the 66th on the first of the year from Skylar Smith. Passes from Keren Goor and Julie Doyle got the ball to Smith who slid and tapped it inside the left post.

Exactly a minute later on the clock, Pepperdine tied it up off a free kick from outside the box. Trinity Watson took the attempt and finished inside the far post, just out of the reach of a diving Nicolos.

It didn't take long for the Broncos to retake the lead, this time off the foot of D'Aquila in the 72nd. D'Aquila got the ball behind the defense after a ricochet off a Waves defender and beat the Pepperdine keeper Zoe Clevely one-one-one to give Santa Clara a 2-1 advantage.

Clevely made three saves on the day.
