Softball Splits on Second Day of NorCal Kickoff

DAVIS, Calif. – Santa Clara softball split with Idaho State and UC Davis in a pair of five innings games Saturday. The Broncos (1-2) topped the Bengals (1-2) 8-0 in five innings to give head coach Gina Carbonatto her first collegiate win as a head coach but fell to the Aggies (3-1) 11-3 in five innings in the finale.

GAME 1
Regan Dias dominated in the circle and contributed with the bat as well in the first game of the day.

Dias (1-0) no-hit the Bengals for 4 2/3 innings before finally giving up a hit but still tossed the shutout, allowing just the lone hit with two walks and a strikeout. At the plate, Dias added a double and scored a run.

Santa Clara got its offense going right off the bat with a leadoff triple from Eleni Spirakis that was followed by an RBI single from Ashly Trierweiler. Later in the inning, Emma Bickford knocked in two more runs with single to right center.

After another run in the second, the Broncos closed things out with four runs in the fifth. Treirweiler ended the game with a single through the left side that scored Allyson Ferreira.

Treirweiler finished with three hits and two RBIs to go with a run scored. Bickford also picked up two hits with six Broncos knocking in at least one run.

Jayden Demoss had the only hit of the game for Idaho State with Isabel Cargill and Frankie Tago drawing walks.

Kelsea Sweeney (0-1) took the loss in a 4 2/3 inning complete game. She allowed eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

GAME 2
The Aggies used the long ball to take control of the game, smashing four in the span of the final three innings after both teams scored two runs in the first without the aid of a home run.

Isabella Leon and Riley Siegel both hit two run blasts in the bottom of the third to put UC Davis on top 6-2 and Maddie Rojas and Leah Polson both added shots of their own in a game-ending five-run fifth.

Leon finished the day with two hits and two runs scored to go with three RBIs and Polson also collected two hits, three RBIs, and a run scored on her three-run homer. Six Aggies picked up two hits apiece and all nine starters had at least one hit.

Katie Kibby (2-1) went the distance to pick up the win. She allowed three runs on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout.

The Broncos scored a pair of runs in the first on a two-run bunt single by Sammy Needham. They added another on an RBI double by Trierweiler in the fourth, scoring Spirakis.

Spirakis and Trierweiler both had two hits with Spirakis scoring a pair of runs. In addition to Needham's double, Bickford and Taylor Burns both picked up hits.

Hannah Edwards (0-1) took the loss in 2 1/3 innings. She allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits with a strikeout.

NEXT UP
The Broncos finish the weekend tomorrow with games against UC Santa Barbara at 9 a.m. and at Sacramento State at 2 p.m.
