Softball Adds Jen Deering as Assistant Coach

SANTA CLARA, Calif.– New Santa Clara softball head coach Gina Carbonatto has hired the first assistant for her staff with Jen Deering, a member of Cal's lone national championship team in 2002, coming on board.

"I'm really excited to get back to coaching at the Division I level," Deering said. "Santa Clara seems like a great fit and I'm looking forward to working with Coach Carbonatto. She's a great person who loves the game and has a lot of energy and experience. I believe in having fun, working hard, and loving what you do and I think the two of us can promote that very well to the team."

"Today is a great day for Santa Clara Softball," Carbonatto said. "I am thrilled to add Jen to our staff and welcome her to Bronco Nation. Jen has competed at the highest levels in several sports, coached all ages of athletes, and brings a knowledgeable, mature presence to this program. Jen will work primarily with the pitchers and catchers, but our entire team just got better with her addition. I cannot wait to begin the season alongside her and her family."

Most recently Deering was the head varsity softball coach at Piedmont High School for seven years. While there, the team was league champions in 2017 and '18 and had the league MVP each year, both pitchers.

She also has experience at the DI level as the top assistant at Boston University from 2006-09. At Boston, Deering was responsible for evaluating talent and the recruitment of athletes while also working with the pitchers.

The Terriers won the America East regular season title in 2007 and the America East Tournament title in 2009 while going 2-2 in regional play in 2009. Junior pitcher Cassidi Hardy named Second-team All-Conference, First-team All-Region, MVP and All-Tournament team of America East Tournament and the team posted the best ERA in the league (2.01). Her first official recruiting class included America East Rookie of the Year and All-Rookie team selection Emily Roesch, and All-Rookie team selection Erica Casacci.

From 2009-10, Deering was the head coach at Chabot college. Prior to that, she was a volunteer pitching coach for the New England Riptide where she worked with former All-American pitchers Jocelyn Forest, Erica Beach, Eileen Canney, and Danielle Henderson.

Deering also has experience working with the Oakland Vipers, an elite club team, from 2016 until now and as a private pitching instructor and strength and nutrition coach from 2003 until present.

She graduated from Cal in 2003 with a B.A. in American Studies and a minor in LGBT Studies. She has an M.A. in Education from Boston that she completed in 2009.

While with the Golden Bears, Deering played both softball and women's basketball.
