Softball Falls to Marist in Weekend Finale

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball concluded the Capital Classic with a 5-2 loss to Marist Sunday afternoon.

After the Red Foxes (8-9) scored twice in the top of the seventh to get on top by four, the Broncos (7-15) responded with a rally that came up just short in the bottom of the frame. Santa Clara loaded the bases with one out to bring the tying run to the plate and a fielder's choice cut the deficit to 5-2 but, Marist starter Calista Phippen was able to record the final out.

Phippen (6-0) went the distance and allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

Eleni Spirakis, who finished the day with two hits and a walk, led off the third for the Broncos with a double and Hannah Russell drove her in with a base hit two batters later to get Santa Clara on the board.

The Red Foxes (8-9) got out to a quick 1-0 lead and never looked back. After a leadoff single by Caroline Baratta, a sacrifice bunt put her in scoring position and Ali Milam followed with an RBI single to center.

Baratta was 3-for-3 on the day with three runs scored and an RBI out of the leadoff spot with Milam adding two hits and three RBIs.

Regan Dias (5-4) took the loss while throwing a complete game. She allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
