SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball played a tight game against Cal Wednesday night at home in the final nonconference action of the year but fell 1-0.

With two down in the bottom of the seventh, Allyson Ferreira kept the Broncos (12-32) alive with a double and Eleni Spirakis followed with a hit-by-pitch to put the winning run on base but the bears (27-25) were able to strand the runners.

"I'm proud of the team," Santa Clara head coach Lisa Dodd said. "We hung in there against a good Pac-12 team and put together a little rally in the ninth."

Both teams had chances to score with a combined 19 runners left on base despite just seven hits.

Cal's single run was unearned and on an infield single in the fourth by Sabrina Nunez with two down.

Kourtney Shaw started and allowed a hit and two walks with a strikeout in a 2 innings, picking up a no-decision. Alexandra Perez (6-0) got the win in 1 2/3 innings with Kamalani Dung getting her second save of the season while tossing 3 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.

Santa Clara had another great chance to score in the fourth when the the bases were loaded with two outs. Cal ace Dung entered for Perez and got a strikeout to escape the jam.

Aubree Kim started and went 2 no-hit innings while getting a no-decision with two walks. Lauren Schiek (2-5) allowed an unearned run in 2 innings while taking the hard-luck loss. Both Lauren Anderson and Regan Dias also had scoreless appearances in the circle.
