Softball Swept on First Day of NorCal Kickoff

DAVIS, Calif. – Santa Clara softball was swept in a season-opening doubleheader Friday at the NorCal Kickoff. The Broncos (0-2) fell to Montana (1-1) 3-0 and UC Davis (2-0) 10-2 in five innings.

"Today was a good start," Santa Clara head coach Lisa Dodd said. "I thought we had a lot of productive at-bats throughout the day and the freshmen came up big for us in their first games. We'll continue to get better and be ready to go tomorrow.

Game 1
Lauren Anderson (0-1) pitched well in her collegiate debut, retiring the first nine batters she faced and tossing a no-hitter through five innings, but took the hard-luck, complete game loss as her defense committed four errors. Anderson allowed three unearned runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Montana finally broke through in the top of the sixth when Lexi Knauss came up with a two-out RBI single to center to make it 1-0.

Knauss and Brooklyn Weisgram both collected RBIs and went 1-for-3 with Maygen McGrath, Jessica McAlister, and Kylie Becker each scoring a run.

Colleen Driscoll (1-0) picked up the win with 5 scoreless innings. She surrendered four hits and fanned one. Tristin Achenbach got the save in 2 innings with three punchouts and a walk.

Santa Clara put its best offensive threat together in the fourth inning with back-to-back one out singles by Sammy Needham and Alexandria Hale but the next two batters went down in order to end the inning.

Regan Dias and Kaitlyn Anderson, both making their collegiate debuts, joined Needham and Hale, also in her first game, with singles.

The Grizzlies added a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh.

Game 2
The Aggies got the scoring going with a four-spot in the second on a grand slam from Maddie Rojas and didn't let up, adding three more in the bottom of the third, two in the fourth, and walked-off with one in the fifth on a solo shot from Brooke Yanez.

Rojas finished the day with five RBIs and Meghan Bradbury went 3-3 with a home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs.

In the circle, Yanez (1-0) tossed the 5-inning complete game, allowing two runs on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

The Broncos got their runs in the third after they loaded the bases with one out behind a single from Eleni Spirakis and walks to Needham and Hale. Hannah Russell followed a two-run single to left.

Aubree Kim (0-1) got the start for Santa Clara and went 2 2/3 innings while allowing five runs on five hits with six walks and a strikeout.
