Softball Walks-Off Against BYU on Senior Day

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A senior sent Santa Clara softball home happy Saturday afternoon in a nine inning 4-3 walk-off Senior Day win over BYU.

With runners on second and third in the bottom of the ninth, Kelsie Barnard stepped to the plate and on the eighth pitch of her at-bat, sent a 3-2 pitch to left to score Regan Dias.

"Today was a really good win for us," Santa Clara head coach Lisa Dodd said. "I'm so happy to send the seniors out on a high note. They are a big part of the change of culture and set high standards for the other players. I'm glad to see them reap the benefits."

Sammy Needham helped the Broncos (16-34, 8-7 WCC) rally with a hit in the ninth, her third of the game. She also added her 16th double of the year, tying Elisha Previte in 1996 for the most in Santa Clara single season history, and chipped in a walk, and two runs scored. Hannah Russell had two hits with a run scored and an RBI as well.

Lauren Anderson (3-11) picked up the win with 1 1/3 no-hit innings of relief after Aubree Kim had tossed two no-hit innings out of the bullpen. Dias started in the circle and got a no-decision, allowing one run on three hits with a strikeout.

BYU (29-24, 12-3 WCC) evened the score at 3-all in the top of the six when three straight Cougars smacked extra base hits.

Allie Hancock hit two doubles and scored a run with Ashley Godfrey also contributing two hits and a walk.

Kerisa Viramontes (2-3) went 4 1/3 innings of relief to take the loss. She allowed a run on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Autumn Moffat started for BYU and allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

After both teams scored in the first, the Broncos took advantage of a dropped fly ball in right with two outs and two on in the third to take 3-1 lead.
