SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball opens the 2019 season under second-year head coach Lisa Dodd Friday at the NorCal Kickoff hosted by UC Davis and Sacramento State. The Broncos play their first game Friday against Montana at 9:30 a.m. and face the Aggies at 2:30 p.m. Saturday they face Nevada at 9:30 a.m. and the Hornets at 2:20 p.m. The weekend wraps-up vs. UC Santa Barbara Sunday at noon.
Preseason All-WCC selection Hannah Russell highlights Santa Clara's returners. The junior catcher led the Broncos with a .331 batting average a year ago and started all 46 games. She also led the team with a .380 on-base percentage and added five doubles to go with six runs scored. She finished third on the roster with 16 RBIs and brought home First Team All-WCC accolades.
Also returning is 2018 Second Team All-WCC pick Aubree Kim and honorable mention Eleni Spirakis.
Kim, a senior, led Santa Clara in wins (5), appearances (34), starts (25), complete games (11), innings pitched (151 2/3), and shutouts. She tossed the fourth no-hitter in program history at Pacific on April 28.
Spirakis finished second on the team in batting average (.252) and RBIs (18). The junior also scored 15 runs with six doubles and a triple a year ago.
Taylor Burns is back after leading Santa Clara with 25 RBIs while hitting a home run, a triple, and six doubles.
Six freshmen look to add a spark to 2019 edition of the team. Kaitlyn Anderson (outfielder), Lauren Anderson (pitcher/outfielder), Emma Bickford (infielder), Regan Dias (pitcher/utility), Allyson Ferreira (infielder), and Alexandria Hale (first baseman/outfielder) are set to make an impact in their first collegiate seasons.
