Softball Heads to CSUN Early Bird Classic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball stays on the road and plays at the CSUN Early Bird Classic Saturday and Sunday. The Broncos face Army at 12:30 p.m. and CSUN at 2:45 on Saturday and close the weekend against Binghamton at 8 a.m. and Army at 10:15 on Sunday.

Santa Clara dropped games to Montana, UC Davis, Nevada, and Sacramento State at the NorCal Classic to open the 2019 season.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara (0-4) hit .255 as a team on the opening weekend of action while scoring 12 runs behind four doubles and a pair of home runs.

Sammy Needham led the offense with a .545 batting average while hitting a double and driving in two runs and scoring two. Eleni Spirakis hit .417 with a team-best five runs scored. She also added a double, a home run, and two RBIs. Hannah Russell knocked in three runs and added a double with Jordan Dawkins and Morgan Modesto both hitting .333.

Lauren Anderson made three appearances, including two complete game starts, with a team-high 15 2/3 innings. Aubree Kim started a pair of games and tossed 7 1/3 innings with Regan Dias and Lauren Schiek also pitching.

THE MATADORS
CSUN (1-4) was outscored in its first five games 37-16 while posting a batting average of .202 and an ERA of 6.43.

Megan Stevens leads the team with a .400 average, a home run, three doubles, four runs scored, and six RBIs. Mackenzie Babbitt is hitting .333 with two runs scored and three RBIs while Kiarra Crockett-Pope has a home run and three RBIs.

Elise Madison posed a 0.75 ERA in 9 1/3 innings over three appearances out of the bullpen. Jillian James tossed a team-leading 12 2/3 innings over three starts but posted a 7.18 ERA with 13 strikeouts.

THE BEARCATS
Binghamton (0-0) went 17-25 a year ago. The Bearcats batted .279 as a team with 32 home runs, five triples, and 57 doubles while scoring 193 runs. In the circle, they had a 4.35 ERA, allowing 223 runs.

The top returning hitter is Lauren Martinez who batted .284 a year ago while adding nine doubles and two home runs. She scored 12 runs and drove in 13. Kassidy Seary hit . 283 with a team-high 11 doubles and was second with 29 RBIs while knocking two home runs.

Rayn Gibson had a 4.01 ERA while appearing in 26 games with 19 start. In a team-leading 103 innings, she struck out 83. Also back are Chelsea Howard(4.46 ERA in 69 innings), Mackenzie Goluba (4.61 ERA in 21 1/3 innings) and Rozlyn Price (4.64 ERA in 74 innings).

THE BLACK KNIGHTS
Army (2-3) hit .248 as a team in the opening weekend of the season while being outscored 37-28. The Black Knights posed a team ERA of 5.94 in 33 innings.

Grace Mattimore leads the team with three home runs and 11 RBIs and is tied for the team lead with four runs scored and two doubles. Madi Gilmore hit .300 with three runs scored, a home run, and three RBIs with Bianca Gonzalez adding four RBIs while hitting .250. Ashley Yoo and Carrie Reilly both hit .278 and scored four runs each while driving in one run.

Jolie Duong tossed a team-high 13 2/3 innings in four games, including one start. She is tied with Macey Newbary who started two games and came in from the bullpen once while posting a 5.48 ERA in 7 2/3 innings with a team-best seven strikeouts. Taylor Drayton tossed 11 2/3 innings with a 6.60 ERA while starting two games and tossing a complete game with one appearance out of the bullpen.
