SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball was swept by Utah State and Sacramento State on the final day of the Capital Classic. The Broncos (7-13) fell to the Aggies (9-10) 4-0 and the Hornets (12-8) 5-4 in 8 innings.

GAME 1
Kapri Toone was terrific in the circle and the Utah State offense gave her more than enough support in the first game of the day.

The Aggies got on the board in the fourth with a single to right by Allanah Alvarado and then added another on a sac fly from Riley Plogger in the fifth. They would add a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.

Toone (5-1) tossed a four-hit shutout with two walks and three strikeouts to pick up the win.

Mazie MacFarlane led the offense with three hits, including a double, with an RBI and a run scored. Alvarado added two hits and an RBI as well.

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Broncos put together their best chance of the day against Toone, getting the tying runs in scoring position but they couldn't get the big hit.

Hannah Edwards collected two hits for the Broncos and Allyson Ferreira added a double. Ashley Trierweiler also picked up a hit.

In the circle, Edwards (3-5) started and took the loss in 5 1/3 innings. She allowed two runs on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout.

GAME 2
In the second game of the day, Santa Clara came up on the short end of a wild extra inning affair.

With one out and a runner on third, a comebacker to Edwards looked like it would keep the runner from scoring, but Sammy Needham dropped the throw at first and Charizma Guzman crossed the plate with the winning run.

Edwards (3-6) suffered the loss in 1 1/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs, one earned, on a hit and a walk.

The game only made it to extras after a rally in the seventh by Santa Clara briefly put them on top by a run. An error on a sac bunt tied the game and Taylor Burns hit a sacrifice fly to give her team a 4-3 lead.

Burns and Needham both finished with RBIs and Eleni Spirakis and Trierweiler both had two hits and scored a run from the top two sports in the order.

With two down in the bottom of the seventh, Lewa Day hit an inside the park home run that was nearly caught in right field but rolled away from two defenders and evened things up at 4-all.

Day went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and Haley Hanson added a pair of hits with a run scored.

Marissa Bertuccio (4-0) went all 8 innings to get the win. She allowed four runs, just one earned, on seven hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.

After Santa Clara scored a run in the top of the first when Spirakis led off with a triple, Sacramento State responded with two in the bottom of the frame. The Hornets would add another in the third to take a 3-1 lead and the Broncos came back with one in the sixth to set up the wild finish.
