Softball Splits on Day One of Silicon Valley Classic II

Tournament Central

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball earned a split on the first day of the Silicon Valley Classic II. The Broncos (8-14) topped St. Francis (5-15) 11-3 in 5 innings but fell to No. 2 Washington (21-2) 19-0 in 5 innings.

GAME 1
Despite spotting Saint Francis a three-spot in the top of the first, the Santa Clara offense more than made up the difference with a season high 11 run outburst, including walking off after a four-run fifth.

The Broncos got two runs back in the bottom of the first on a two-run single from Taylor Burns and would add five more in the second. Trierweiler knocked in the first two of the inning with a single up the middle and then Burns knocked in three more with a bases clearing single.

Burns finished the game with five RBIs and two hits. Trierweiler was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored and Emma Bickford added two RBIs and a pair of hits. Eleni Spirkais also scored three times out of the leadoff spot behind a hit and two walks.

Lauren Anderson started and lasted just 1/3 of an inning, surrendering three runs, before giving way to Lauren Schiek who went the final 4 2/3 for the win. Schiek (1-1) allowed just two hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts.

The Red Flash scored all of their runs with on swing of the bat. Rachel Marsden hit a three-run shot to right center with one out in the top of the first.

Marsden (2-6) also started in the circle and took the loss in 4 1/3 innings. She allowed 10 runs, six earned, on 10 hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

GAME 2
The No. 2 team in the country was too much for Santa Clara in the night cap. Washington's offense started early and just kept going, putting up a season high 19 runs. The Huskies scored at least two runs in every inning.

Both Sami Reynolds and SilentRain Espinoza picked up five RBIs with Reynolds going 5-for-5 with four runs scored and Espinoza 4-for-4 with two runs scored. Three other Washington players added multiple RBIs.

Gabbie Plain (10-2) picked up the 5-inning complete game, allowing four hits and two walks with nine strikeouts.

Spirakis, Trierweiler, Burns, and Allyson Ferreira picked up the hits for the Broncos, with Spirakis' being a triple.

Schiek (1-2) started and took the loss in 2/3 of an inning. She allowed five runs on four hits with a walk.
