Softball Hosts Silicon Valley Classic Beginning Friday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – For the first time under new head coach Gina Carbonatto Santa Clara softball will play at home when the Broncos host the Silicon Valley Classic Friday through Sunday. Santa Clara will take on Yale (4:30 p.m.) and Boise State (7 p.m.) Friday, Cal Poly (4:30 p.m.) and Canisius (7 p.m.) Saturday, and North Dakota (11:30 a.m.) Sunday.

The Broncos (5-4) are off to a good start in 2020 and won three of four games at the Highlander Classic last weekend, picking up a two wins over UTEP and one over Idaho State.

Offensively, Santa Clara is hitting .324 with a .401 on-base percentage as a team with 47 runs scored. The Broncos have hit 12 doubles, a triple, and two home runs.

Sammy Needham, the WCC Player of the Week, is off to torrid start at the plate, hitting .586/.606/.724. Her batting average puts her at No. 10 in the country. The junior has also added nine runs, seven RBIs, and four doubles.

Also off to quick starts are Hannah Russell, Ashley Trierweiler, Taylor Burns, Emma Bickford, and Eleni Spirakis. Russell is hitting .364 with four runs scored and three RBIs while Trierweiler is hitting .360 and has scored seven times with three doubles and three RBIs. Burns has five RBIs and a run scored with a .333 average while Bickford leads the team with nine RBIs and has scored five times while smacking three doubles and batting .323. Spirakis is tied with Needham for the team lead with nine runs scored and has added a triple and a home run to go along with a .308 batting average.

Hannah Edwards' 16 1/3 innings are the most among healthy players and she has appeared in four games and made three starts while picking up a complete game. Aubree Kim has made three appearances and two starts while tossing 6 2/3 innings and Lauren Anderson has started twice, throwing 6 innings. Lauren Schiek has pitched 7 2/3 innings in three appearances out of the bullpen.

Regan Dias is hitting .350 with two doubles, a home run, three RBIs, and three runs scored while also leading Santa Clara in the circle with a 1.35 ERA, a record of 3-0, two complete games, one shutout, and 20 innings pitched but will is out indefinitely with a knee injury.

TICKETS
All-day tournament passes will be sold at Santa Clara Softball Stadium for $15 each on Friday and Saturday. There are NO single-game tickets either of those days. Tickets to either of the two games on Sunday are $9. Gates to the Santa Clara Softball Stadium, as well as its ticket booth, are open one hour prior to the start of the first game each day.

PROMOTIONS
In recognition of head coach Gina Carbonatto's first season, all softball alumni will receive free admission at Friday home games when presenting their alumni card at the ticket booth. PARKING
For weekday games, the Leavey Center lot (see below for access), located on Accolti Way off El Camino Real, is free beginning one hour prior to the start of the first game of the tournament (8 a.m. on Friday). Any other parking facility on campus will be subject to normal daily rates or restrictions, including the main structure, located adjacent to Stevens Stadium on Palm Drive. During the weekend, campus parking facilities are free (except for permit required locations). With a number of home events on Saturday, the Leavey Center will have limited availability. Fans should utlize the main parking structure if the Leavey lot is full. Click here for a campus map and parking restrictions.

The construction of the Stephen C. and Patricia A. Schott Athletic Excellence Center has necessitated the closure of the main entrance (off Accolti Way) to the Leavey Center parking lot. Access is now ONLY directly from El Camino Real (Route 82). If you are traveling east on El Camino Real, the Leavey lot entrance will be approximately 150 yards on the right (enter through the black iron gate) after you pass the main campus entrance. If you are traveling west on El Camino, make a u-turn at the main campus entrance at Palm Drive/Railroad Ave and follow the same directions.
