Big Innings Sink Softball Against Utah State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball was undone by a pair of big innings in a 12-5 loss to Utah State Saturday at the Silicon Valley Classic II.

The Aggies (13-11) put up six runs in the fifth after briefly falling behind and added five more in the seventh pull away.

Makenzi MacFarlane had the big blast in the fifth with a three-run home run and finished the day with a pair of hits, two runs scored and five RBIs. Stephanie Reed also had a solo shot and scored a pair of runs and Gabriella Jimenez was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Kapri Toone (8-1) tossed 5 innings in the start and picked up the win, allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts. Delaney Hull pitched the final 2 innings to get her second save of the season.

The Broncos (8-15) were down 1-0 heading into the fourth but scored two runs to take a short-lived lead. After the six-run fifth by Utah State, Santa Clara responded with three more in the fifth to make it 7-5.

Sammy Needham led the offense going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Eleni Spirakis and Ashley Trierweiler both had two hits and a run scored.

Lauren Schiek (1-3) started and took the loss in 4 2/3 innings. She allowed seven runs on seven hits with a strikeout.

NEXT UP
The Broncos face UC Santa Barbara tomorrow at 10 a.m. to wrap up their final home tournament.

TICKETS
All-day tournament passes will be sold at Santa Clara Softball Stadium for $15 each on Friday and Saturday. Single game tickets will be sold for the last game of Friday and Saturday as well as Sunday. Click here to purchase online or contact the ticket office in Leavey Center weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. at (408) 554-4660 or BroncoTickets@scu.edu. Gates to the Santa Clara Softball Stadium, as well as its ticket booth, are open one hour prior to the start of the first game each day.

PROMOTIONS
In recognition of head coach Gina Carbonatto's first season, all softball alumni will receive free admission at Friday home games when presenting their alumni card at the ticket booth. Saturday is the Red Game. Show your Bronco pride by wearing red to the game. Kids 12 and under are invited to run the bases following the game.

PARKING
For weekday games, the Leavey Center lot (see below for access), located on Accolti Way off El Camino Real, is free beginning one hour prior to the start of the first game of the tournament (8 a.m. on Friday). Any other parking facility on campus will be subject to normal daily rates or restrictions, including the main structure, located adjacent to Stevens Stadium on Palm Drive. During the weekend, campus parking facilities are free (except for permit required locations). With a number of home events on Saturday, the Leavey Center will have limited availability. Fans should utlize the main parking structure if the Leavey lot is full. Click here for a campus map and parking restrictions.

The construction of the Stephen C. and Patricia A. Schott Athletic Excellence Center has necessitated the closure of the main entrance (off Accolti Way) to the Leavey Center parking lot. Access is now ONLY directly from El Camino Real (Route 82). If you are traveling east on El Camino Real, the Leavey lot entrance will be approximately 150 yards on the right (enter through the black iron gate) after you pass the main campus entrance. If you are traveling west on El Camino, make a u-turn at the main campus entrance at Palm Drive/Railroad Ave and follow the same directions.
