Softball Welcomes Stanford in Home Opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball will make its long awaited return to the SCU Softball Field when it hosts Stanford Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the 2021 home opener.

The two teams faced each other Sunday in the Broncos (0-1) season opener. After a pitcher's duel for the first 3 innings, the Cardinal (4-0) broke things open and won 8-0 in 5 innings.

Due to current guidelines in Santa Clara County, spectators will not be permitted inside the SCU Softball Field. In addition, only essential personnel is allowed on campus. The general public is allowed only to 'pass through' campus, such as on a walk, but no lingering, gathering, lounging, etc. is permitted.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara hit .285 as a team a season ago with a .355 on-base percentage. The Broncos smacked 30 doubles, two triples, and three home runs while scoring 102 runs.

Ashley Trierweiler, who was named Preseason All-West Coast Conference, led the team with a .409 batting average and eight stolen bases in as many attempts. She also added five doubles, nine RBIs, and 20 runs scored. Emma Bickford batted .304 with a team best eight doubles and 21 RBIS. She hit a home run and scored 13 runs.

Regan Dias was having a terrific season at the plate and in the circle before going down with an injury. In the batter's box, Dias hit .350 with two doubles, a home run, three RBIs, and three runs scored in seven games. In the circle, she tossed 20 innings over four games, including two starts. Dias had two complete games and one shutout while posting a 1.05 ERA and a 3-0 record.

THE CARDINAL
Stanford (4-0) have been crushing the ball to open the season. As a team, the Cardinal are hitting .387 with a .456 OBP and a .613 slugging percentage. They have scored 30 runs in four games.

Emily Schultz leads the way with a .727 batting average and nine RBIs to go with a double, a triple, and a home run while scoring four runs. Emily Young is hitting .615 with five stolen bases, four RBIs, and four runs scored. Taylor Gindiesperger has two triples and is tied for the team lead with five runs scored to go with a .500 average. Teaghan Cowles also has scored five runs and is hitting .444.

In the circle Stanford has been just as good, posting a 0.81 team ERA in 26 innings with 27 strikeouts.

Alana Vawter leads the way with a 0.64 ERA in two starts, including a shutout of Santa Clara. She has punched out 14. Regan Krause and Maddy Dwyer have both tossed a complete game and have an ERA of 1.00.
