SAN JOSE, Calif. – Santa Clara softball got its offense going early and a strong pitching performance in a 4-1 win at San Jose State Friday evening.

The Broncos (3-6) scored single runs in the first and second off RBIs from Emma Bickford and Bailey McLaughlin. The bats woke up again in the fifth as Santa Clara added a pair of insurance runs. The big play in the fifth was a sac fly by Kat Sanchez that scored two runs after an error by the Spartans (3-10).

Bickford finished the day with a pair of hits, including a double. Ashley Trierweiler continued her strong play out of the leadoff spot, collecting two hits and scoring a run.

Zoe Straughn (1-0) started for Santa Clara and picked up the first win of her young career. She went 4 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on three hits with five walks. Regan Dias pitched the final 2 1/3 innings while allowing just one hit and a walk with a strikeout for her second save of the season.

San Jose State's lone run of the night came in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Makayla Englestad.Four different players collected a hit for the Spartans with Jillian Figueroa getting a triple and Malia Luna scoring the run.

Jenessa Ullegue (3-4) started in the circle and took the loss. She allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits with a strikeout in 5 innings.

The two teams play again tomorrow in Santa Clara with first pitch set for 1 p.m.

Due to current guidelines in Santa Clara County, spectators will not be permitted inside the SCU Softball Field. In addition, only essential personnel is allowed on campus. The general public is allowed only to 'pass through' campus, such as on a walk, but no lingering, gathering, lounging, etc. is permitted.
